About fluconazole

What does it do?

Thrush is a fungal infection, commonly caused by a type of yeast called candida. Although candida is naturally present in the body, an imbalance can trigger thrush symptoms. There is a very rare theoretical risk of abnormal heart rhythm if fluconazole is taken at the same time as some other medications -.

1. Why am I using Diflucan?

Diflucan contains the active ingredient fluconazole. Diflucan is used for the treatment of infections caused by sensitive fungi or yeast. Fluconazole belongs to a group of medicines called azole antifungals.

It works by stopping the growth of fungi which causes inflammation, yeast growth and ultimately fungal infection.

This medicine is for external use only and does not pass into the breast milk. Talk to your doctor, pharmacist or nurse if you have any concerns.

Talk to your doctor, pharmacist or nurse if you are taking, or have recently taken any other medicines, including medicines that you buy without a prescription from your pharmacy.

2. What should I know before I use Diflucan?

Do not use if you have ever had an allergic reaction to Diflucan or any of the ingredients listed at the end of the CMI.

Talk to your doctor if you have any other medical conditions, take any other medicines, or are pregnant or plan to become pregnant or are breastfeeding.

3. What if I am taking other medicines?

Some medicines may interfere with Diflucan and affect how it works. Your doctor will discuss with you these interactions.

Check with your doctor if you are taking any of the following:

  • medicines that are listed at the end of the CMI:
  • cisapride, itraconazole, ketoconazole, voriconazole and itraconazole
  • sildenafil (Viagra)
  • antibiotics such as erythromycin and erystatin
  • dietary supplements
  • medicines to treat abnormal vaginal bleeding such as anticoagulants (e.g. warfarin)
  • medicines used to treat fungal infections such as tetracyclines and amphotericin B
  • medicines to treat HIV infection such as ritonavir and saquinavir
  • medicines used to treat HIV infection such as efavirenz
  • medicines used to treat fungal infections such as ketoconazole and itraconazole
  • medicines used to treat HIV infection such as ritonavir
  • medicines used to treat fungal infections such as cotrimoxazole and itraconazole
